Medical Bills & Medical Debt

Separate billing, insurance, assistance and collection concerns before choosing a payment strategy.

Check the bill before choosing a payment strategy

A medical balance may involve billing errors, an insurance decision, financial-assistance eligibility or a collection account. Start by comparing the itemized bill, insurance explanation of benefits, payments already made and any estimate you received. Identify the provider and the service dates involved.

Ask which review process applies

Financial assistance may be available through a hospital or provider, depending on its policy and your circumstances. CMS also describes specific dispute and complaint processes, including certain unexpected out-of-network bills and qualifying bills that exceed a good faith estimate when insurance was not used. These protections do not apply to every bill in the same way.

Do not assume medical debt is invisible

Medical billing and credit reporting are separate questions. The CFPB’s broad medical-debt credit-reporting rule was vacated by a federal court in July 2025. Do not assume all medical debts must disappear from credit reports or that a reporting change erases the underlying bill. The current reporting rules, relevant company policies and the facts of an account require review.

Prepare for your consultation

Gather bills, insurance decisions, estimates, financial-assistance applications, payment records and collection notices. Tell the office if a court case has been filed or an insurer’s appeal is pending. Ask whether the next step is correcting the bill, seeking assistance, disputing a collection claim, negotiating payment or comparing broader debt-relief options. Provide medical and financial records only through an approved secure channel.
